چکیده
In a previous publication it has been shown that germanium dioxide is non-toxic to the mature female albino rat when injected subcutaneously in amounts up to 180 mg. per kilo of body weight. This is a quantity equivalent to a dose of nearly 11 gin. for a 60 kilo man. The measure of the toxicity was survival after the administration of the compound. In no case did any animal receiving the germanium dioxide succumb or even present obvious symptoms of disturbance. 1 A systematic study was then made of the effect of the compound on the erythrocyte and white cell content of the normal rat blood. ~ I t was found that, regardless of sex, a marked and valid increase in the red cells in the circulation followed the injection of relatively small amounts of germanium dioxide solutions. In view of certain gross findings at autopsy of the rats used in these experiments, and because of the persistence of the effect for many days after the injections, we considered ourselves justified in concluding that germanium dioxide is an erythropoietic agent of remarkable potency. In this report we propose to present the completed evidence on which that belief is based. The material used was obtained from the rats serving as subjects in the preceding paper. 2

The Erythropoietic Action of Germanium Dioxide
Injections were made of a sterile 0.4 per cent solution of germanium dioxide into four lots of mature male and female albino rats. Exact conditions of control were maintained. To two lots there was administered in four doses at intervals of 4 days a total of 6.6 mg. of the oxide per kilo of body weight. To two lots there was given in three doses at like intervals a total of 45 mg. of the compou...
متن کاملEvaluation of epigenetic changes of liver tissue induced by oral administration of Titanium dioxide nanoparticles and possible protective role of Nigella Sativa oil, in adult male albino rats
Objective (s): Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) have been recognized as biologically inert material and have been used in a multitude of applications. Nevertheless, the negative impact on the human health is not yet well understood. Aim of the work: The study attempted to evaluate the epigenetic changes of the genome, in the form of DNA methylation in liver tissue samples, resulting fr...
متن کاملHistopathological Effects of Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles and The Possible Protective Role of N-Acetylcysteine on The Testes of Male Albino Rats
Objective Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a white pigment which is used in paints, plastics, etc. It is reported to induce oxidative stress and DNA damage. The N-acetylcysteine (NAC) was used to fight oxidative stress-induced damage in various tissues. The aim of this study was to evaluate the toxic effects of TiO2 nanoparticles by oral administration and the protective role of NAC on testes of a...
متن کاملTHE ACTIVATION OF CARBON DIOXIDE AT A MAGNESIUM (1 00) SURFACE THE ROLE OF OXYGEN TRANSIENTS
X-ray photoelectron and high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopic (XPS-HREELS) studies have shown that the adsorption of carbon dioxide at Mg(100) surfaces at 80K is followed by a dissociative reaction leading to the formation of a metastable surface carbonate above 80K. The formation of a carbonate species is proposed to proceed through oxidation of C0 (g) by an active oxygen su...
متن کاملKINETIC STUDY OF SYNTHESIS OF TITANIUM CARBIDE BY METHANOTHERMALREDUCTION OFTITANIUM DIOXIDE
Abstract: Reduction of the Titanium dioxide, TiO2, by methane was investigated in this work. The thermodynamic of reaction was examined and found favorable. The reaction of titanium dioxide with methane was carried out in the temperature range 1150°C to 1450°C at atmospheric pressure with industrial high porosity pellets prepared from titanium dioxide powder. The evolved gas analyzing method wa...
